Amazon Music Metadata Updates

(March 2024): Everything P Tune Studio Artists Need to Know

Amazon Music rolled out an important update in March 2024, tightening its rules around metadata, artwork, and audio quality. These changes are designed to keep the platform clean, trustworthy, and fair for both artists and listeners.

If you distribute through P Tune Studio, don’t worry — we’re here to help you meet every requirement smoothly.

1. Duplicate Album Artwork Is No Longer Allowed

Amazon Music will no longer accept the same artwork being reused across multiple releases — especially in multi-artist compilations.

✔ What this means for you

Every track and the main album must have unique artwork.
This helps prevent confusion, protects originality, and keeps your catalog clean.

✔ Example

If you release a Various Artist album with 7 tracks and also release each track individually under each artist:

  • The album must have its own artwork
  • Each of the 7 tracks must also have different artwork

Identical covers across multiple releases will be rejected.

2. Altered/Modified Versions Require Ownership of the Original

Amazon Music will not accept:

  • Sped-up versions
  • Slowed-down versions
  • Pitch-shifted edits
  • Remixed edits of someone else’s track

Unless you own the copyright to the original recording, you cannot distribute modified versions.
So:
✔ You can release a sped-up version of your own song
❌ You cannot release a sped-up version of a cover, remix, or someone else’s work

This rule protects original creators and prevents misuse of trending edits.

3. Generic Artist Names Are No Longer Accepted

Amazon Music has banned artist names that sound like categories or search keywords, such as:

  • “Sleep Sounds”
  • “Top Hits”
  • “Relaxing Jazz”
  • “White Noise”
  • “Christmas”
  • “Meditation Music”
  • “Hip-Hop”

If your current artist name falls into this category, P Tune Studio can help you update it to something original and eligible.

4. Misleading Sound-Alikes & Covers Will Be Rejected

Amazon is taking a tougher stance against:

  • Imitation vocals
  • Sound-alikes
  • Tribute versions designed to mimic the original
  • Cover versions that may trick listeners

If Amazon believes a release could confuse users, they will not approve it.
To avoid issues, keep your version unique and clearly distinct from the original artist.

5. No Advertising or Promotional Metadata

Like most DSPs, Amazon does not allow any promotional or marketing elements inside metadata or artwork.

This includes:
❌ URLs
❌ Social media handles
❌ Hashtags
❌ Search keywords
❌ Paid advertising language
❌ Logos unrelated to the artist or label
❌ Illegal content (varies by territory)

Your metadata must be clean, accurate, and strictly related to the release.
